mag hag

Thanks Lurve, for sending me the latest issue! I perused it this weekend at my office..see?

LURVE MAGAZINE // ISSUE 3 // SPRING/SUMMER 2010

Very cool issue, my favorites were the editorial shot by my blogger galfriend-turned-IRL galfriend Zana Bayne ! SO much A.F. Vandevorst (not a shocker, if you follow Garbage Dress!)

It really got my springtimes juices flowing. I feel a new mag buying spree coming on...

the craftiest of crafternoons

I have been dreaming and dreaming some more about the Comme des Garçons blanket coats from the second I saw those bumpyheadedpinkladies come tromping down the runways.

COMME DES GARÇONS F/W 2009

LOOOOOK AT IT. What a glorious thing. DREAMMAKER & HEARTBREAKER, that's what you are Ms. Kawakubo.

Sigh.

Sorry, where was I? OH RIGHT. Welllllll....I figured I might DIE without one and since my CASH FLOW does not allow for such acquisitions, I decided to take matters into my own (well-intentioned but not very sew-savvy) hands.

When I finally made a thriting/funtimes Philly date with my girl Sunshine, who is WAY more talented than I, I emailed her a pic of the coat and was like..can we also make these? She was like, duh, sure, no PROBS. AND I WAS FILLED WITH JOY.

So..how do you make one? First you hafta get the goods. What you will need is: a coat you wanna hack into, a blanket, an iron, a sewing machine (it COULD be hand-stitched but you might cry), and some thread. A dress form was pretty helpful, mainly because we were making this up as we went along.
No dress form? Make your little sister stand there for you while you poke her full of pins.

Men's army trench: $5.95. Crazy wool blanket: $2.95. Both from the thrift earlier that day. Clown painting: optional.

Got it all? Start that shit already! Cut up that coat! Fold the raw edge, iron that shiz, sew it up.

Please note I refused to take off the new fur I had ALSO thrfited. It made me feel like Sharon Stone in Casino. I am nothing if not weird.

HI SUNSHINE, HI

So then you just...fiddle around with the blanket. We basically folded ours in 4 and cut the corner out (poncho ideas?). Then we sliced up the front and...pinned it and tried it on and til it looked right.

I decided I HAD to have pockets, because I always want pockets. So (with Sunshine's amazingly patient and helpful talk-through) I cut the pockets out of the trench, cut a slash in the blanket, and sewed them in! AMAZING.

HEY, I MADE THAT

And that is IT. Swear to Gagaloo, it was PRETTY EASY. The hardest/most annoying part (besides getting the drape right)? Sewing through a blanket. There is a LOT of FABRIC at times and it can make the machine a lil bit BITCHY. Other than that, it was pretty easypease. It took about..2 hours total, tops.

Would I have figured some sort of version of this out without Sunshine's help? Probably. Would it have looked nearly as good without Sunshine's help? ABSOLUTELY NOT. THANK YOU, SUNSHINE!!!

YAYAYAYAYYYYY...I AM GETTING SO DIY ADDICTED.

It's not perfect, it's not realdealholyfield, but I am pretty happy with it!

One thing I would've done differently: My coat was ginorm and so I had to move buttons around and do a lil sleeve doctoring to make it fit better. Sunshine used a perfectly fitted trench for hers and that was totally better.I love that we made the same thing but with 2 totally different results!

HOW CUTE IS THIS??

I am sure that Sunshine will post a much more comprehensive how-to on her blog if you need more specifics.

AND NOW I MATCH MY BATHROOM. DREAMS DO COME TRUE.

I am on such a DIYHIGH, guys! What project can I tackle next????

bifurcation nation

I am really tackling new frontiers this week...Get ready for it:

PANTS! Omigod.

If I am only going to own ONE pair of pants, I am pretty comfortable with it being Peggy Noland dropcrotch cheetah print ones with kneepatches and 2 sets of pockets. (the 2nd set are at the knees, duh).

Purchased at Peggy's boutique in Kansas City diuring the Vagabond Tour of Summer 09. I wore them all weekend and found them to be an absolute DELIGHT, if not QUITE the conversation starter.

Please note my bloglove doppelganger (bloggelganger?) in the top photo, Miss LouLou of LouLouLovesYou. Lou was in town for an all-to-brief visit from Londontown and not only did we get on famously, but we realized we look more than a lil bit alike? WEIRRRDDDDD! (But she has a much nicer accent and more alabaster complexion- jealz!).

PS In case you missed it the first time around, my lil interview with Peggy from July, girlcrush to the max.

new favorite band alert:

forsorcerers
!

i met emily (the drummer, the lady of the fern in the pic above) at her studio/store sword+fern and was totally enamored of her crystal jangles (i am SO getting one before i leave).

she told me i should check out her band, they were playing this week at holocene.

SO GLAD I WENT!

the ladies of forsorcerers were SO FUCKING RAD. i think one or two of the gals are from team dresch (!! 90s heartcrushtimes).
it was like black sabbath rock out metalyness in a dark room with a giant projection over them of waves crashing and birds flying..i was so so into it.

portland: they play again sept 19, don't miss out.
new york and the world at large: GET ON THIS BAND!

another sunny day

as soon as i made plans for portland, i emailed miss camille of the childhoodflames and was like GURL GIMME THE INFO..because duh.

not only did she send me an epic list, she offered to take me on a lil walking/streetcar tour of vintage and designer amazingnessssss...i ACCEPTED and on monday we met up and had some fun.

i don't want to ASSUME, but i would say we had the best time when she took me to nordstrom to meet her best friends aka the designer clothing racks:

CHANEL SILVER SEQUINZ. so. DOPE.
yeah, $3,000. on CLEARANCE. anyone, anyone? there were TWO left, we were tempted to get the pair (nottttt)

lanvin knit shrugcardigan, so soft, so aamzing, so many dollarssss. sighhhhh. (paging yokoo?)

chanel ankle bags! remember these? inspired by lindsay lohan's ANKLE MONITOR?! ohhh KARL, you card...they were hilarious. if i had a spare 200 (clearance!) i woulda considered it, HANDS FREE IS THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE! yah?

PSA: this dries collection is as A-MA-ZINGGG in person as you would want it to be. the beading/sequinnage is badonkz. this dress looked terrible on me but i still liked wearing it.

camille had a harder time saying byebyeee:

i mean...if you looked like this in this dress mabes you would shed hot salty tears, too. it was the lightest thinnest silk ever with a bajillion beads n sequins at the top. it was SO SICK.

we decided: the tiny gold patch MADE the dress.

and as i have been asked by more than a few: camille is as lovely and sweet and cool in person as you would expect. as she is a tad shyer than me, i talkedtalkedtalked most of the time....(duh, obvs, duh). thanks again, camille!!!

our field trip next week: THE BINS (goodwill outlet...clothes by the pound...holy schiesse)
stay tuned!!!

ps..go read her post about our day, she has realllly good pics of the INSANE jean-paul gaultier vintage 80s bustier (ahem..zana...you need it) we saw and you can see me acting/looking like a total nerd....a million xo's for you, camille

if you don't know, now ya know

yesterday afternoon (to night..to breaka breaka dawn..) was the first stress-worry-anxiety-free few hours i have spent in WEEKS.

kat & louise took me on an epic adventure yesterday..i had no idea where we were going at any point, it was all surprises..so best!!

the ladeez room at the university club, no cameras or phones allowed, OOPSYDOOPS.
ps, WHY ARE MY FRIENDS SUCH AMAZONS? pps, why am i such a midge?

wherein we:
had teatime at bergdorf's (so dope!)
shoe shopped on the 5th floor (um, HUGE sale just F Y IIIIIIII)
had a few champagnes at the university club (i am obsessed, kat is a member- BE JEALOUS)
imbibed gallons of flavored vodka (horseradish is AMAZING, TRUST) at the russian vodka room and when ssam bar was closed early (sadface!!)
we hit up crif dogs at closing for hawt dawgs and a neil diamond singalong (ours)

any night where i end up in the street in the early morning yelling juicy lyrics (born sinner, the opposite of a winner) is a great one, no?

ps, the movers should be here within the hour. LET'S DO THIS.

i felt so RED today..easier to find me in the snow?

um..you guys? i take pictures of myself when i'm alone and post them on the internets.
